Seasonal Water Damage Considerations in Van Nuys
Van Nuys has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The rainy season runs from November through March, and that is when we see the most water damage from roof leaks, flooding, and burst pipes. But water damage can happen any time of year, so it is important to be prepared.
Spring in Van Nuys brings warmer weather and the last of the winter rains. We see a lot of mold remediation calls in spring because mold that started growing during the winter rains becomes visible. We also handle water damage from sprinkler system leaks and pool overflows.
Tip
Check your attic and crawl space for signs of moisture or mold. If you had a roof leak during the winter, get it inspected before the summer heat makes mold worse.
Summer is hot and dry in Van Nuys, but water damage still happens. We see a lot of air conditioner condensate leaks and appliance failures. The heat can also cause pipes to expand and crack, especially older pipes. We also handle water damage from fire sprinkler system tests.
Tip
Check your air conditioner drain line for clogs. If you see water stains near your AC unit, call us before the damage spreads. Also, check under sinks for slow leaks.
Fall is when we start preparing for the winter rains. We see an increase in calls for roof inspections and gutter cleaning. Water damage in fall often comes from early storms that catch homeowners off guard. We also handle water heater failures as people start using their heaters.
Tip
Clean your gutters and check your roof for loose or damaged shingles. If you have a flat roof, have it inspected before the rains start. Also, test your sump pump if you have one.
Winter is the busiest season for water damage restoration in Van Nuys. The rain events can dump two inches in a day, causing flooding in the Sepulveda Basin and roof leaks across the city. We also see a spike in burst pipes during cold snaps. Our phones ring nonstop from December through February.
Tip
If you have a power outage or your heater fails, keep your faucets dripping to prevent pipes from freezing. If you see water pooling in your yard or garage, call us immediately. Do not wait for the rain to stop.
